The Belated St Andrew's Day Post

Which actually relates to Saturday night as much as St Andrew's Day (which was on Sunday, and which celebrates Scotland's patron saint, for those of you who don't know)...

On Saturday night, the Scottish Sun newspaper organised a big street party in Kirkwall (well, they organised lots of events round the country) to get Scots celebrating our saint's day, like the Irish celebrate St Patrick's Day. So, from 7pm til Midnight, Broad Street (the main street of Kirkwall) was alive with music from local bands, and there was a procession in the midst of it to The Peedie Sea for a fireworks display.

Some 3,000 people braved near-freezing temperatures (although it was a beautiful night with no rain and hardly any wind) to party the night away... and those 3,000 people included Viki and I.

Took one or two photos, and a couple of short bursts of video... which are here and on my photo blog...

The Fireworks:

And a burst of video of local band Shoot The Piper playing on Broad Street...

And read about it in The Sun.

Happy St Andrew's Day!

Best wishes to you if you're Scottish, know someone Scottish, have Scottish ancestors, have passed through Scotland, flown over Scotland, eat Scotch Eggs, drink whiskey / Scotch, whatever... however tenuous your connection, Happy St Andrew's Day to you anyway!
