Woah....

...it sure has been a long time since I've updated the blog, hasn't it?

Well, I guess this first new post should be to update you on what's happened in the last 4 months... So, here goes...

A Month Of... Taking A Few Months Off

Well, the daily videos were the first casualty - They might come back at some stage... I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Turtley New Arrivals

On 31st October, Viki & I welcomed a new member to the family - a yellow-bellied slider terrapin, who we named "Aristotle" (named after Telly Savalas, and so I could make the "Aris-turtle" pun). Here he is on the first day we had him...

And then, on the night before Christmas my brother gave to us (to be sung to the tune of "On The First Day Of Christmas")... not 2 turtle doves, but a map turtle who we christened "Atlas" (Atlas? Maps? See what we did there?)... Again, here's the new addition on day 1...

Now, Aristotle is much bigger than he was... Atlas is getting a wee bit bigger... and this is how the brothers like to sit in the tank...

(in fact, looking behind me, that's how they are sitting right at this moment).

I will admit I was a little unsure when we got Aristotle, mainly because I'd never had reptiles as pets before, or even handled them, but Viki kept them back home in Hungary. But now I love our little guys (er... we've decided in our own way that they are boys... We can't really tell for sure yet, cause they're too peedie, but we always refer to them as "he", and "brothers", so I guess we might be in for a bit of a red face if we discover in a year or two that one or both of them is/are female).

Oh, they've also got company in the tank... When we got Aristotle, Viki said that live food is good for terrapins, so we bought a peedie fish for him to catch and eat... except he decided that the fish is "friend" not "food" - so Findus (as he's been christened) lives happily (if a little warily at first) with them in the tank!

So, what else has been happening?

End Of An Era

After almost 15 years of working in the same building (10 years for one company, and then nearly 5 years for another), I am now in the position of being unemployed. My boss declared the firm insolvent, and we were closed down on 11th November. I'd known it was going to happen for a few months, and couldn't say anything to anybody, and I made the decision to hang on til the end and collect my wages as long as I could, and then my redundancy (15 years' worth, since when I started the last job, I was employed under TUPE legislation). However, there have been some problems getting the money I was entitled to, which are still ongoing to a certain extent - so the last few months have been hard financially, and very stressful. Now I'm back to claiming Job-Seekers Allowance and searching for a job, along with everyone else who has become a victim of the recession. I'm finding it very hard to keep motivated and upbeat, which is pretty much why the blog has been on ice for months.

Snow Longer Funny

Speaking of "on ice" - god, I am sick of this winter! Up here in Orkney, we seem to have had ice and snow and sleet and frost solidly since around Christmas time. Our last lot of snow was just starting to go yesterday, and this morning I looked out the window and saw big, white, wet flakes drifting down. Then, later this afternoon, and now again this evening, there have been showers of more sleety stuff, meaning that it's once again white outside! I am just so fed up of going slowly and carefully all the time, worrying that I'm going to fall and break an arm or a leg (bearing in mind that I still have a bandage on one leg to try and heal a peedie ulcer I have and, as a result, am having to wear shoes that are too big, and one had to be cut and has to be held on with micropore tape - and they've not got the best grips in the world for dealing with ice and snow). I swear I'm going to hibernate for the rest of winter if this is going to go on much longer!

Christmas & New Year

Even with no job and not much money, Christmas and New Year were pretty damn good this year. The house was decorated for the first time in years (I never bothered latterly... I just didn't see the point, and just wanted the "Festive" season to be over with as soon as possible). However, with Viki here, it was so different. We followed the Hungarian tradition, and put the tree and decorations up on Christmas Eve, and it was such fun. Then Christmas dinner was had at my brother's. We didn't go and see the Ba's on Christmas Day (both went up anyway, so least said about that, the better). Then, the day after Boxing Day, we (my brother, Viki & me) were all invited out to my sister's for tea.

New Year was good too. Viki & me went up to Broad Street for Midnight, and I don't really remember too much else, so I guess it was a good night (mind you, it was 2 months ago, and I'm getting on a bit now, so maybe it's just general old age that's made me forget). Had a spot of good news on New Year's Day, as the Mens Ba came doon for the first time in god knows how long, and Viki got to see it! I think her scream of "Yes!" as the ba went in the harbour was louder than everyone elses! Boys Ba still went up though, but it was a start! New Year's Day dinner was Hungarian Bean Soup... doesn't sound like much, but it was thick and warming and full of smokey ham. Delicious!

Other News

Not really too much other news, I don't think. Just celebrated Viki's *ahem* 29th birthday on Saturday. Friday night her & me went out for a meal, before David joined us for some drinks. Then Saturday night one of her workmates came through from Stromness and we went out drinking. Fun at the time, but I think I'm getting too old for serious drinking now!

So, I think that's enough to be going on with. I'm feeling a little light-headed after all this typing, so I think I might have to go lie down in a darkened room for a while. Promise it won't be so long til the next update, although I won't make any rash promises about when it'll appear.

Oh, and please feel free to comment, although I'm having to turn the comment moderation on again, because I'm getting a few spam comments being posted. I promise all genuine comments will be approved, whether positive or negative (although obviously I'd prefer positive). Or why not sign the guest book?

Okay... that really is all for now... Bye bye... x

Born To Rock... Christmas Day...

I've known ever since I started this feature on January 1st this year, who would be my Christmas Day artist.

So, who have I chosen who interrupted their mummy & daddy's festivities demanding to be let out?

Kirkwall Christmas Tree Lighting 2008

Viki & I were at this on Saturday night.

Every year for the last 25 years, Hordaland in Norway (which has been our twin region for the same length of time) has donated a Christmas tree to Orkney, and it stands outside St Magnus Cathedral on the Kirk Green.

And usually the convenor of Hordaland region comes over for the tree-lighting ceremony, part of which features local school children portraying the part of St Lucy and her attendants.

So here are some bits of video Viki took...

I Can't Believe I Didn't Post This In December!

I had iTunes on shuffle last night, and this song came on... and I realised I never posted it here when there was the campaign to make it Crapmas No. 1 last year...

Malcolm Middleton (former member of former band Arab Strap) and "We're All Going To Die"...

I think it's a fantastic song... and not at all depressing as everyone complained...

Hey, remember... It's nearly Christmas time!

Since My Last Visit...

Christmas Eve...

I was working in the shop til 3pm, which was busier than I expected it to be. Really, can't you shoppers get everything organised so you're not still trying to buy presents & stuff at the VERY - LAST - MINUTE - POSSIBLE? (That said, my brother & I did dash to the supermarket 10 minutes before they closed). I did a little bit of experimental cooking, in that I made meatloaf for the first time - spicing it up a little by adding a packet of apricot & nut stuffing mix. It turned out okay, but it would have been better if I'd got steak mince (but there was none left in the supermarket 10 minutes before closing time, funnily enough). Oh - Jilly (if you still read my blog occasionally) - I've had another hot water bottle disaster! The cheap one I bought a month ago (remember, the second one I had to buy because the first one didn't let enough heat through?) sprung a leak at the neck overnight... so I've had to go and buy ANOTHER one (not £3 this time), and the cheap one is in the bin! :^(

Christmas Day...

Watched "Noel's Christmas Presents" in the morning (which made me cry). Did the rounds visiting with my brother in the afternoon - went to see our Auntie and then to visit our sister & brother-in-law - before going back to my brother's for a yummy Christmas dinner. Didn't watch much on telly, only "Doctor Who" (which was hmm... okay... but not THAT "special" a Christmas Special) - was it just me, or was there really a lot of crap on TV this year? Thanks to Scott & Julie and Nev for their presents - Nev, the calendars will be well displayed, and Scott & Julie, I'll try not to kill the crocus bulbs...

Boxing Day...

Erm... I slept. Watched a little bit of telly, had a couple of slices of meatloaf, and slept a lot.

Today...

Back at work, but only til 4pm (erm, except it's now 20 to 5, and I'm still at the office... but I'm buggering off now).

Ta-ra!

The (B)Advent Calendar - Dec 24

No, really... it IS Christmas Eve... honestly!

And my final picture represents a familiar pastime for Christmas Eve... Trying to speed-defrost the turkey!

There's bound to be folk all over the turkey-eating world with their still-frozen bird sitting in the bath of hot water... or with a hairdryer rammed up its arse on full heat!

And then Christmas Day there will be families sitting down to tinned stew with all the trimmings because their turkey's still a semi-frozen lump.

Oh, and Cheeky... I want me chocolate back!

The (B)Advent Calendar - Dec 23

Ah, Christmas... What would it be without a barney or six?

The possibilities for conflict are endless...

Dinner round the in-laws' house... They barely tolerate you, criticise the way you bring up their darling grandchildren, make remarks all day about how they "just happened to meet" that "lovely" boy or girl that their son or daughter was engaged to before you - and they're single again, won't let you wash the dishes in case you "break something again" - and then moan about how you're "so lazy and never did a damn thing to help"...

The kids... They fight over who got the best toys, and then break each others' things "accidentally"...

Husband & Wife... He drinks all day, she can't cook like his mother, there's the "Why can't you make an effort to get along with my mother?" arguement...

These sound familiar?

I Can't Keep It In Any Longer...

I'VE HAD A REALLY, REALLY, REALLY BUSY DAY... I'M WORKING TOMORROW FROM 12 - 4pm WITH MORE PEOPLE STILL BUYING BLOODY CHRISTMAS STUFF - COME ON, YOU'VE GOT TO STOP SOMETIME!!! JUST HOW FECKING LAST MINUTE CAN YOU MAKE LAST MINUTE?

I'M WORKING CHRISTMAS EVE UP TIL 3pm, AND I'M SICK TO BLOODY DEATH OF THIS FESTIVE CRAP... I JUST WANT IT OVER, SO THAT LIFE CAN GET BACK TO NORMAL, WITH NO MORE ENFORCED CHEERINESS AND PRATS IN SANTA HATS AND BITS OF TINSEL TIED ROUND THEIR PONYTAILS!

THE WORST THING IS THAT EVEN AFTER TUESDAY'S OVER, THERE'S STILL THE BLOODY SALES TO COME... AND SCREEDS OF ADVERTS ALL ADVERTISING "CHEAP" SOFAS AND PACKAGE HOLIDAY DEALS TO TEMPT YOU INTO EVEN MORE DEBT...

HIBERNATING CREATURES HAVE THE RIGHT IDEA... JUST SLEEP UNTIL FEBRUARY.

Right, vent over... now, calm...

At this point I'm going to bugger off and watch something on telly with a pizza, and then sleep until I have to get up tomorrow to work.

I really hate this time of year... not just because of unhappy memories associated with it, but it gets dark so early... and it's bloody freezing coz we're stuck in the middle of a really cold snap. I can hardly feel my fingers as I'm typing...

Right, now I'm going downstairs to where at least there's a peedie heater on warming the room ready for me...

The (B)Advent Calendar - Dec 22

What's on telly over Christmas? Bloody repeats, that's what!

There's bound to be some or all of the following:

The Two Ronnies
Morecambe & Wise
Only Fools & Horses
The Great Escape
Scrooged
The Vicar Of Dibley
The Sound Of Music

It almost makes the annual "Monopoly" battle seem attractive... or just falling asleep after dinner...

The (B)Advent Calendar - Dec 20

The scourge of many a family Christmas - Monopoly!

Midway through the afternoon, someone will moan about the rubbish on telly, and the dreaded words "Why don't we play a game?" will escape their lips.

And you know that an hour later, some or all of the following will have happened:

1. You'll open the box and discover some bits are missing, and you'll remember that the dog ate the dice last year.
2. The first arguement will be over who gets to be the Scottie Dog.
3. Auntie Jean will keep forgetting the rules.
4. The next arguement is over who's the banker. (The stupid bugger who suggested you play the game in the first place is the biggest banker of the lot!).
5. Someone will keep wandering off to watch something on TV and you'll have to take their turn for them.
6. The dog will eat a hotel and be sick in the corner.
7. The game will end when someone throws a huge strop when they're made bankrupt, kicking the coffee table and sending the board flying in the air, scattering all the pieces all over the floor.

Don't do it to yourselves, people... watch the telly instead!

The diet / pigout / diet routine over Christmas!

First of all you start about October, and there's the crash diet to fit into that little black dress for the Christmas parties.

Then, looking foxy and gorgeous, you stuff yourself full of turkey, Christmas pud, mincemeat pies, cakes, sweets, party nibbles, and so on... "because it's Christmas".

Then, after New Year, there's the New Year's resolution diet to shift it all again!

The (B)Advent Calendar - Dec 18

Had a little experience of this yesterday whilst attempting to do Christmas shopping (yes, that is a bit last minute, but I'm too skint to buy for many people this year... so only those folks who are very, very, very special to me (you know who you are) are getting a pressie this year) - the dreaded CROWDS...

Now, imagine... Orkney's streets are pretty narrow... and our shops are mainly fairly small... so imagine trying to fit a couple of hundred desperate shoppers in that confined space... not to mention the fact that the street isn't pedestrianised, so you're likely to get mown down by a boy racer as you struggle with your 20 bags of shopping!

Never mind, 2 weeks and it'll all be over...

The (B)Advent Calendar - Dec 17

Ahh... the wonderful smell of a real tree... which looks beautiful for 2 days and then *FLOOMPH* all the needles drop off, and you end up with a twig... and spend the next 3 weeks hoovering up pine needles!

The (B)Advent Calendar - Dec 14

The annual snooze-fest that is The Queen's Christmas Address...

But the oldies always want to watch it... so you prod Granny & Grandad awake from their sherry-induced snoring, assemble all the family in front of the telly and listen to HRH (if you can hear her over Granny saying "My, doesn't she look lovely?" the kids bleating that they're bored and can't they watch the film on the other side instead, and Grandad snoring again).

This year has got to include all about her Diamond Wedding, hasn't it?

And, of course, there was always the infamous "Annus Horribilus", wasn't there?
