A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

Here we go then, the last link of the chain, seeing as it's the last day of the month...

From Jim (as in "(Jim's Theme)"), we go to James... and to "Sit Down"...

James

Lol... I guess this kind of links back to the start of the month, because you could go from "Sit Down" to "Lay Lady Lay" - so I've made a circle!

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

So, from Pixies and "Velouria", on we go...

If you knock the "ia" off "Velouria", you get Velour, which is a material... and if a thing isn't a material... then It's Immaterial...

So we get "Driving Away From Home (Jim's Theme)"...

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

Okay, yesterday's track was "It's Grim Up North", and today's is "Velouria" by Pixies...

What is the link? Well, you take the word Grim and, if you add an "m" on the end, you get Grimm. The Brothers Grimm were famous writers of Fairy Tales, and a Pixie is a type of Fairy...

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

Today we move from The Beautiful South to discover "It's Grim Up North"... at least, according to The Justified Ancients Of Mu-Mu (The JAMS, aka The KLF), it is...

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

Heh... as my mother would say, "there's more than one way to skin a cat" - and so there is actually more than one way that we could get from yesterday's song to today's...

The route I planned was...

The lead singer of Fairground Attraction was Eddi Reader... and if you are a Reader, you enjoy Books... so you get to The Beautiful South and "My Book"...

But you could also get to this by way of their single "Perfect 10"...

Beautiful South

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

Okay... yesterday's Ghost Train could be described as a Fairground Attraction... so we get to "Perfect"...

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

If you're Crazy, you're probably suffering from Madness...

Madness and "(Waiting For) The Ghost Train"...

Monday, August 24, 2009

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

Okay, yesterday's track was Metallica doing a cover of a Thin Lizzy song...

From Lizzy, we get to Elizabeth, then Elizabeth II... who is - of course - the Queen...

Queen and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love"... a live performance...

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

Okay, from Radiohead and "Fake Plastic Trees" we go...

Our tinpot local radio station is fairly amateur, and sometimes disappears off the air for hours at a time, leaving only Static... If you are Static, you are Still... and a Still is what you use to distill Whiskey...

So we get a pleasure track (no guilt at all) that I've had before, but I don't care...

Metallica's cover of "Whiskey In The Jar"...

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

Aw, bollocks... that kinda snuck up on me... I've reached the end of the pre-prepared posts again, so it's time to think on the hoof (okay, fairicks don't have hooves, and neither do selkies, but lets not split hairs)...

So, we've got The Pretenders and "Hymn To Her"... where to from there?

Er... how about... if you're a Pretender, you are Fake... and then we get to Radiohead and "Fake Plastic Trees"...?

Radiohead

Hmm... off now to think about where to go tomorrow...

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

What do you do in Church? Sing Hymns...

The Pretenders and "Hymn To Her"...

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

Where do you find Christians? In Church, of course...

Culture Club (see, told you I was stuck in the 80's) and "Church Of The Poison Mind"...

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

Of course, another word for Reap is Harvest... so today we get to The Christians and "Harvest For The World"...

And apologies, but I can't seem to be able to drag myself out of the 80's at the moment...

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

So, yesterday we had It Bites... If you go out in Orkney about this time of year, better bring your midge repellant... 'cause, my god, they bite!

Midge Ure is (I say "is", because apparently they are another of the 80's bands that have jumped on the nostalgia bandwagon and reformed) the lead singer of Ultravox... so we get "Reap The Wild Wind"...

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

So, where do we go today?

The city of Carlisle is in the shire county of Cumbria in England. Cumbria was created in 1974, bringing together several former administrative counties, including Cumberland... And in Cumberland in 1962, one Francis Dunnery was born...

Who is Francis Dunnery? He's probably most famous as drummer, and then singer & guitarist, with the band It Bites.

So we get to "Calling All The Heroes"... see... tenuous in the extreme...

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

Whew... managed to get another 5 days sorted out in advance...

An Oasis is a fertile spot in a desert, and a desert is a vast area of sand (unlike a dessert, which I always get confused with, which is a (hopefully vast) area of chocolate, or ice cream, or cake, or - my personal favourite - cheesecake... ooo... a desert of cheesecake... my idea of heaven)...

Sorry... got a bit carried away there! So, we go to Belinda Carlisle and "Circle In The Sand"...

Belinda Carlisle (and as a spooky coincidence, it's her birthday tomorrow... Happy Birthday, Belinda).

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

Ooo... I'm getting a bit nervous now, because this is the last of the connected songs I had pre-prepared on my trusty Excel spreadsheet, and I'm feeling kinda backed into a corner here after this one...

From Smoke City, we get to Oasis and "Cigarettes & Alcohol"...

Oasis

I might be asking for suggestions for connections tracks soon if I'm going to get to the end of this month, folks!

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

U2, other than being a band, is also the name of a German submarine (Unterseeboot-2)...

Submarines go Underwater, which brings us to Smoke City and "Underwater Love"...

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

If you Bragg about something, you've probably got a fair bit of Pride...

U2 and "Pride (In The Name Of Love)"...

A Month Of... Working On The Chain Gang...

If you've got Brown hair, you would be a Brunette...

Billy Bragg and "Greetings To The New Brunette"...
